Cocktail Review: Mint Julep

Mint Julep

Also known as the traditional beverage of the
Kentucky Derby, the mint julep is a sturdy and classic cocktail made of simple ingredients. All you need is bourbon, simple syrup, mint and crushed ice to put together this refreshing mix.
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Mix Time:1 minute
Total Time: 6 minutes

Ingredients

● A 1⁄4 ounce of simple syrup

● 8 mint leaves

● 2 1⁄2 ounces of bourbon (preferably one of higher quality like Blanton’s, Makers Mark or Woodford Reserve)

● Crushed ice

● For garnish, 1 sprig of mint

Instructions

● Add the simple syrup to a chilled julep cup

● Add mint leaves and muddle gently to release the mint aroma

● Add the bourbon in and stir

● Fill the chilled cup with crushed ice and mound it over the top

● Stick the sprig of mint along the side of the julep cup

● Serve with a straw and enjoy

Recipe notes

● You may want to make the maple syrup ahead of time. All you need do is mix equal parts of water and sugar. Heat until sugar dissolves, let it cool to room temperature.

● While it is traditional to make the cocktail in a fancy silver-plated julep cup, it works well in a simple rock glass or any other glassware.
